The first band requested is my absolute favorite: Plastic Tree! (or "Pura", as many fans call them) If you read my entries at all, you've heard of them...and now you can actually hear them! (If you haven't already, that is!)
The band's music can be pretty easily separated into two eras, most clearly defined by the drummers. Older Pura, from their indies days in the early '90s through New Years Eve 2001; and newer Pura, from that time until present. (Though the line is blurry around 2002, with the album "Träumerei", which showed elements of both). I will start with the old, and then move to the new:

痛い青 (itai ao; "Painful Blue") - from the album "Hide & Seek" - [translated lyrics]
This song really demonstrates a lot of what "Old Pura" is to me. The sound is a little unfinished and raw...and the lyrics are melancholy but beautiful and poetic.
トレモロ (tremolo) - from the album "Parade"& Tremolo single - [translated lyrics]
Not only is this song beautiful, but the music video is my favorite.
祈り (inori) - from the Tremolo single
This is a cover of that song "Turn Turn Turn (Everything Has a Season)". Ryuutarou translated the lyrics to Japanese on his own, even though he doesn't speak English well at all. I just love the emotion he puts into this song!
サーカス (circus) - from the album "Puppet Show" - [translated lyrics]
Best song ever, in my opinion. When I first heard this song, I had it on repeat without pausing if for DAYS. Literally. I slept with it playing, I showered with it playing, I ate with it playing...I failed a test that week because I listened to it through school. I have no idea why I love it so much...but I do.
サイコガーデン (Psycho Garden) - from the album "Strange Fruits" and a demo tape - [translated lyrics]
I think it would be nothing short of a crime to not include this song. It was on one of their first demo tapes, and on their first album. It was one of the first songs they wrote and it has been played at EVERY live they have done since it was written. I don't necessarily consider it one of their all-time-bests (though I do love it to pieces), but the fact that they still play an old indies song over a decade later is really awesome.

This song is based on an article he wrote about his days at school. The harder sound became very normal for Pura, though it was a bit of a shock at first.
「雪蛍」 (yukihotaru; "snow firefly") - from the album "cell."& yukihotaru single - [translated lyrics]
Very beautiful and pleasant (though sad) song. I love to watch it live..Ryuutarou gets really into it.
空中ブランコ (kuuchuu buranko; "sky swing") - from the album "chandelier"& kuuchuu buranko single - [translated lyrics]
This song is a call back to their earlier days. It has many of the same floaty and dream-like qualities, but with a more finished sound. It is my favorite "New Pura" song.
黒い傘 (Kuroi Kasa; "Black Umbrella") - from the album "Nega to Poji" - [translated lyrics]
Best song off the newest album, in my opinion. It starts off really quiet and slow...but BAM! The chorus hits you. I lovelovelove it!

The band's music can be pretty easily separated into two eras, most clearly defined by the drummers. Older Pura, from their indies days in the early '90s through New Years Eve 2001; and newer Pura, from that time until present. (Though the line is blurry around 2002, with the album "Träumerei", which showed elements of both). I will start with the old, and then move to the new:
Old Plastic Tree: 1994-2001
 | 有村竜太朗 Arimura Ryuutarou Vocals The introverted vocalist of sometimes questionable sanity, Ryuutarou is the front-man of the band. Especially in the band's early years, he struggled with depression, hypochondria, schizophrenia, and most likely drug problems that stemmed from a lonely childhood spent mostly in the hospital. As sad and horrible as this is, it lead to very interesting and unique lyrics. His voice is rather higher than most people expect, but many love its "ethereal" quality. |
 | 長谷川 正 Hasegawa Tadashi Bass Ryuutarou's closest (and possibly only) friend from his youth, Tadashi is also understood as the band's leader. In the early days, he wrote the music for almost every song. He started the band after asking Ryuutarou to help him. |
 | ナカヤマ アキラ Nakayama Akira Guitar The incredible guitarist with a love for ramen noodles, Akira is a fan-favorite for being the most easy-going in the group. He was in two bands with Ryuutarou before Plastic Tree: RELIGION MIX and DROP' IN SHOP LIFTERS. He joined Pura (then called "CAM-FLAGE") in 1994 after hearing about Ryuutarou joining. He's been with them since. |
 | 大正谷 隆 Osyoudani Takashi Drums Actually the third drummer, but he was the first to stay more than a couple months. There are many rumors about why Takashi left the band...from his dislike of the direction the band was going to getting fed up with Ryuutarou's psychotic episodes. When he did leave, he took a portion of the fans with him...as well as the classic Pura sound. |

This song really demonstrates a lot of what "Old Pura" is to me. The sound is a little unfinished and raw...and the lyrics are melancholy but beautiful and poetic.

This is a cover of that song "Turn Turn Turn (Everything Has a Season)". Ryuutarou translated the lyrics to Japanese on his own, even though he doesn't speak English well at all. I just love the emotion he puts into this song!

Best song ever, in my opinion. When I first heard this song, I had it on repeat without pausing if for DAYS. Literally. I slept with it playing, I showered with it playing, I ate with it playing...I failed a test that week because I listened to it through school. I have no idea why I love it so much...but I do.
サイコガーデン (Psycho Garden) - from the album "Strange Fruits" and a demo tape - [translated lyrics]
I think it would be nothing short of a crime to not include this song. It was on one of their first demo tapes, and on their first album. It was one of the first songs they wrote and it has been played at EVERY live they have done since it was written. I don't necessarily consider it one of their all-time-bests (though I do love it to pieces), but the fact that they still play an old indies song over a decade later is really awesome.

New Plastic Tree: 2002-Present
 | 有村竜太朗 Arimura Ryuutarou Vocals; 2nd guitar After Takashi left, Ryuutarou changed his style a bit. He started singing with a deeper voice and started playing the guitar more often. His lyrics became less introverted and lost their psychotic edge (though there are a few exceptions). |

This song is based on an article he wrote about his days at school. The harder sound became very normal for Pura, though it was a bit of a shock at first.

Very beautiful and pleasant (though sad) song. I love to watch it live..Ryuutarou gets really into it.

This song is a call back to their earlier days. It has many of the same floaty and dream-like qualities, but with a more finished sound. It is my favorite "New Pura" song.
黒い傘 (Kuroi Kasa; "Black Umbrella") - from the album "Nega to Poji" - [translated lyrics]
Best song off the newest album, in my opinion. It starts off really quiet and slow...but BAM! The chorus hits you. I lovelovelove it!
